Why is Roopkund a Must-Do Trek?

Roopkund is a famous glacial lake in the state of Uttarakhand in India. This lake is famous due to more than five hundred skeletons of humans that are found at the edge of the lake.

  • Location & Altitude: Roopkund is a high-altitude glacial lake situated at approximately 5,029 meters in the Chamoli district of the Garhwal Himalayas.
  • Accessibility: The trek is accessible via Kathgodam and Nainital, located around 235 km and 217 km respectively, making it a popular adventure destination.
  • Trishul Massif Setting: The lake lies beneath the majestic Trishul massif, surrounded by rugged Himalayan terrain and snow-covered peaks.
  • Known as the Mystery Lake: Roopkund is famously called the “Mystery Lake” due to the presence of ancient human skeletons found around its banks.
  • Historical Significance: The skeletal remains, including those of humans and animals, are believed to date back several centuries, adding a unique historical dimension to the trek.
  • Scientific Discoveries: The skeletons were rediscovered in 1942 by a forest ranger and later studied by Indian and international research teams to understand their origin and cause of death.
  • Possible Causes: Studies suggest that the deaths may have been caused by extreme natural events such as hailstorms, landslides, or harsh weather conditions.
  • Unique Trek Experience: The combination of natural beauty, high-altitude challenge, and historical mystery makes Roopkund one of the most fascinating treks in India.
