Roopkund is a famous glacial lake in the state of Uttarakhand in India. This lake is famous due to more than five hundred skeletons of humans that are found at the edge of the lake.
Day 1:Your journey begins from Kathgodam early in the morning, gradually leaving behind city life as you enter the scenic Kumaon region. The drive takes you through beautiful hill towns like Bhimtal, Almora, and Kausani, offering panoramic views of the Himalayas.
As you move closer to Lohajung, the landscape transforms into dense forests, winding mountain roads, and quiet valleys. By evening, you reach Lohajung — a peaceful Himalayan village that serves as the base camp for the Roopkund Trek.
The trek begins with a descent towards the Neel Ganga River, crossing a scenic bridge surrounded by dense forests. After this, a steady uphill climb leads you to Didna Village.
This traditional Himalayan village offers a glimpse into local culture, with wooden houses and warm hospitality. Surrounded by mountains and greenery, Didna is the perfect place to slow down and connect with nature.
Today’s trek takes you through dense oak and rhododendron forests, gradually opening up to one of the most stunning alpine meadows in India — Ali Bugyal.
As you step into the vast green meadows, you are greeted with breathtaking views of Mt. Trishul and surrounding peaks. The open landscape, fresh mountain air, and endless grasslands create a surreal trekking experience.
An easy and scenic day, as you walk through the rolling meadows of Ali Bugyal and Bedni Bugyal. The trail offers uninterrupted views of Himalayan peaks and vast open landscapes.
You will pass through Bedni Bugyal, known for its spiritual significance and serene beauty. Gradually ascend to Patar Nachauni, your campsite for the night.
The terrain begins to change as you move into higher altitudes. The trail becomes steeper and more rugged, taking you to Kalu Vinayak, a sacred point offering stunning panoramic views.
From here, descend slightly to reach Bhagwabasa, your high-altitude campsite surrounded by dramatic mountain landscapes. The air gets thinner, and the environment feels more raw and powerful.
The most challenging and rewarding day of the trek begins early in the morning. As you ascend towards Roopkund, the terrain becomes steep and snow-covered (in season).
Upon reaching Roopkund, you witness the famous “Mystery Lake”, surrounded by snow and rugged peaks. The presence of ancient skeletal remains adds a unique historical and mysterious charm to the place.
After spending time at the lake, descend back carefully to your campsite.
Begin your descent through the same stunning landscapes, passing Bedni Bugyal once again. The long downhill trail takes you through forests and scenic valleys until you reach Wan village.
From Wan, a short drive brings you back to Lohajung, where you can relax and celebrate the completion of your trek.
Drive back to Kathgodam with unforgettable memories of the Roopkund Trek. The mountains slowly fade into the distance, but the experience stays with you forever.
